The Problem

This page will describe the issue of 9-1-1 calls from multi-line telephone systems. The 9-1-1 call taker faces significant challenges when answering a call from large business systems. Adequate location information is often not available or, even worse, incorrect, thus compromising the call taker’s ability to provide sufficient information to emergency response personnel to find you and render assistance in a timely manner.

The Board Resolution on Government contracts for Wireless Services and Multi-line Telephone Systems

The Metropolitan Emergency Services Board, in an effort to provide the highest level of
9-1-1 services available, including accurate location information on all
9-1-1 calls placed in the metro area, has passed a resolution recommending
that local, state and federal governments specify the requirement of
location information on 9-1 -1 calls. The resolution asks that when
governments purchase or contract for wireless services for government
issued cellular phones, that they specify the wireless service be compliant
with enhanced 9-1-1 and provide Phase I, and Phase II compatible services.
It also states that governments should specify the requirement of accurate
location information when they upgrade or purchase new multi-line telephone
systems for their own government offices.
